I continue my journey north toward Oslo and then east to Stockholm. On the way, I have stopped in Gothenburg. Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city – and as compared to Stockholm on the east coast, it is on the west coast. I am here to surprise someone – but I won’t say more, just in case they stumble upon this picture or blog post. Of course, if they see me here, in their home town, they are going to immediately write to me and say, “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” Well – I am. It is a surprise, and I will see you and your family tomorrow. Act surprised!
The “Visit Sweden” website says this about Gothenburg: ” Gothenburg (Göteborg), Sweden’s second biggest city, combines vibrant urbanity, a friendly vibe and seaside charm. It also has culinary prowess and a world-class craft beer scene.” You know what I will be checking out tonight!
Today, I had a chance to truly start my official FIKA tour. There are some marvelous konditori’s or pastry shops. This is where Swedes come in the morning or afternoon to celebrate FIKA – that magical moment of sitting down with a friend, partner or colleague to have a coffee and pastry – and well – chat.
I check out three different places today – but ultimately settled on getting my morning pastry from Brogyllen’s – a pastry shop that was created sixty years ago.
Evidently, while in town, I am supposed to get a “haggabullen” – a kanel or cinnamon roll the size of a plate:
Instead, I settled for a pastry that is scented with cardmom and filled with vanilla cream.
It was deliscious.
